Paralleling Configurations

Cummins 1500 kW Configured for Parallel Operation
When a generator set is operating in parallel with another generator set it is operating in synchronization with the loaded generator(s). Newer systems feature automatic paralleling hardware and software. This affords the facility with an uninterruptable power supply during main power loss.

Many industries require uninterruptable power supplies. Often systems are designed with redundancy. Redundancy can be defined as having a backup generator (secondary) to assume load in case of online generator (primary) failure.
When backup power systems are designed some considerations in design are:

  • Size of area generator(s) will be located in
  • Load demands of facility during power outage
  • Multiple smaller generator vs. single larger generator with redundant configuration

Newer generators feature control systems that utilize datalink communications. This allows each generator set to communicate engine and system information over a SAE datalink connection.
Hospitals and Datacenters are among the industries that require a redundant configuration. Two basic configurations used to meet emergency power requirements are:

  • Primary generator assumes load upon power loss. Secondary generator parallels with primary for load requirements or assumes load during primary generator shutdown event
  • Multiple generators assuming load in parallel during power loss. These configurations feature an offline generator that can assume load during loss of one generator or period’s high power demands

The experienced staff at Generator Source can aid in design for new installations, update current installations with newer technology (if available) or remove the system in use and install a newer generation system.
