What Is Generator Repair Service?
Generator repair service involves the diagnosis and correction of faults that prevent a generator from functioning as intended. This includes both mechanical and electrical failures, such as engine malfunctions, alternator issues, control panel faults, and fuel system breakdowns. Unlike routine maintenance, which is preventive, generator repair addresses existing problems and restores systems to working condition.
Common repair situations include:
- Engine failure or hard starts
- Fuel system leaks or clogs
- Loss of voltage or unstable output
- Alternator problems such as worn bearings or winding damage
- Control panel faults or ATS issues
Repair services typically begin with a full diagnostic evaluation using advanced tools to identify the root cause of failure. Our technicians may perform load testing, electrical output checks, fuel quality tests, and visual inspections of major components. Based on the findings, we complete the necessary repairs, which may involve replacing worn parts, rebuilding critical systems, or upgrading outdated controls. Our goal is to bring your generator back online quickly while ensuring lasting performance and reliability.
Generator Repair Services We Offer
Generator Source offers a complete range of repair services tailored to commercial and industrial applications. These services include engine repair, fuel system correction, alternator diagnostics, and control panel troubleshooting. In many cases, we are called to address hard starts, failure to transfer load, loss of voltage, or irregular power output.
We repair all makes and models of commercial generators, with services including:
- Diesel and natural gas engine diagnostics and repair
- Alternator and generator end repair
- Fuel system troubleshooting and pressure correction
- Cooling system repair and component replacement
- Load testing and output verification
- Control panel service, programming, and retrofits
- Emergency on-site repair and scheduled service calls
Engine-related repairs may involve correcting timing issues, replacing injectors, repairing cooling systems, or rebuilding major engine components. If the issue lies within the generator end, our team can test windings, replace bearings, and align rotors and stators to restore electrical production. For control-related issues, we service digital and analog panels, reprogram automatic transfer switches, and upgrade obsolete components to meet current standards.
We also perform fuel system repairs, including replacing clogged filters, draining water-contaminated tanks, and restoring proper fuel pressure. If your generator is experiencing vibration, overheating, or poor fuel efficiency, we can evaluate the system as a whole to identify contributing issues. We are equipped to handle both minor repairs and complete system overhauls, depending on what is required to restore operational readiness.
Why Generator Repair Service Matters
A malfunctioning generator puts critical systems at risk. When power fails and backup systems do not respond, the consequences can range from financial loss to safety concerns. Repairing your generator promptly not only restores functionality but also prevents further damage caused by running a compromised system.
A failed generator system can lead to:
- Business interruptions and costly downtime
- Safety risks in critical environments
- Equipment damage caused by unstable power
- Regulatory compliance violations in industries like healthcare and utilities
Timely repair services extend the life of your generator, protect your investment, and maintain compliance with regulations that may govern your industry. Businesses in sectors like healthcare, telecommunications, utilities, and manufacturing often depend on generators to power essential services. Delaying repairs in these environments can lead to serious disruptions or code violations. Generator repair is not just about fixing equipment, it is about restoring confidence in your power infrastructure.
Who We Serve / Typical Industries

Agriculture
Irrigation systems, storage facilities, and livestock operations all depend on generator power in remote or rural areas. We repair on-location and offer fuel system restoration to ensure uninterrupted service during peak demand.

Cities / Municipalities
Water treatment plants, traffic systems, and public safety infrastructure rely on reliable backup power. Our team supports city and county operations with both emergency repair response and long-term system restoration planning.

Commercial Real Estate
Multi-tenant buildings, office parks, and retail centers often rely on generators for elevator systems, HVAC, lighting, and access control. We provide flexible repair services that minimize tenant disruption and restore critical functions.

Data Centers
From cellular infrastructure to local server rooms, data continuity depends on generators that perform without fail. We repair telecom generators on-site and verify output stability to ensure consistent service delivery during outages.

Hospitals
Hospitals, clinics, and long-term care centers rely on generators to maintain patient safety during power loss. When equipment goes offline, response time is critical. We provide priority repair support for life-safety systems to minimize downtime and help meet NFPA and Joint Commission requirements.

Manufacturering / Warehouse
Power outages in a production environment can bring operations to a halt. We help keep your assembly lines, machinery, and support systems running by quickly diagnosing and repairing generator problems that interrupt your processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I service my industrial generator?
We recommend servicing your generator at least twice a year, typically every 3 months, under normal operating conditions. Critical standby units or generators in harsh environments may require quarterly service. Regular preventive maintenance includes changing the oil and filters, inspecting plugs and belts, testing the battery, and running the generator under load. In addition to these services, it’s wise to exercise the generator (run it with a load) monthly, or weekly for critical systems, to keep the engine and alternator in good shape
Following this schedule will greatly improve reliability and ensure your generator is ready to perform when an outage strikes.

Can you help with emergency generator repairs?
Yes – we offer 24/7 emergency repair services. We know that generator failures don’t always happen 9–5, and downtime can be very costly. Our technicians are on-call around the clock and can be dispatched quickly to your site in an emergency. We’ll troubleshoot the issue, work to get the generator running immediately (even if via a temporary fix), and then provide a full repair solution. Our goal is to minimize your downtime in any way possible. We also keep rental generators available as a stop-gap measure if a repair requires significant time – either way, we’ve got you covered in an emergency.

Do you provide generator rental services during maintenance?
We service all major commercial/industrial generator brands. This includes diesel and natural gas generators from manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Cummins, Generac, Kohler, MTU, Detroit Diesel, Katolight, and many others. Our team’s multi-brand expertise means you don’t need separate service providers for different gensets in your fleet – we can maintain and repair them all. We also handle the associated equipment like transfer switches (ASCO, Thomson, Zenith, etc.) and control systems. Chances are if it produces power, we have experience with it!

Do you provide generator rental services during maintenance?
Absolutely. We maintain a fleet of portable rental generators that can be delivered to your site to supply power during scheduled maintenance or extended repairs
If your primary generator needs to be taken offline for a major service or overhaul, we’ll arrange a temporary generator to keep your facility powered with minimal interruption. Rental units are available in a range of sizes to suit your load. This ensures you have continuous power even when your main generator is out of service. Just let us know you’ll need a backup, and we’ll include a rental setup as part of the maintenance plan.

Can Generator Source handle large-scale industrial generator installations?
Yes – we have extensive experience with large-scale installations and complex power projects. Our team has handled projects up to and beyond 20 MW in capacity, involving multiple large generators in parallel. We provide end-to-end project management for these jobs: engineering design, logistical planning (including heavy equipment transport and cranes), on-site installation, and final commissioning. We also have the technical expertise to implement advanced controls for synchronizing multiple generators, and we’ve worked on systems for hospitals, data centers, manufacturing plants, and utility peaking sites. If you have a big power project, we have the know-how and resources to execute it successfully from start to finish.
