Generator Power Solutions for Data Centers

The digital world depends on seamless operations, and a power outage of even a few seconds can lead to catastrophic data loss, SLA violations, and damaged client trust.

At Generator Source, we understand the non-negotiable demands of the data center industry. With over 50 years of experience, nationwide inventory, and EGSA-certified technicians, we provide the expertise, equipment, and ongoing support needed to design and maintain a fully resilient emergency power strategy.

Why Reliable Power Is Mission Critical for Data Centers

Generator Source serves Colorado, Florida, Texas, and customers across the United States, delivering both equipment and service solutions.

  • Zero tolerance for downtime: Even seconds of lost power can disrupt servers, applications, and client access.
  • SLA compliance: Power interruptions often breach service agreements, leading to financial penalties.
  • Client trust: Continuous uptime is the foundation of a secure digital infrastructure.

Understanding Data Center Power Demands

Redundancy Standards (N+1, 2N)

Data centers are designed with redundancy to eliminate single points of failure.

  • N+1: One additional generator beyond what is required to run the load.
  • 2N: A mirrored system with full redundancy for maximum reliability.
UPS and Generator Integration

The UPS provides instant power during an outage, while the generator takes over for long-term operation. The handshake between the UPS, ATS, and generator must be seamless.

Scalability and Paralleling Switchgear

As data centers expand, backup power must grow with them. Paralleling switchgear enables the integration of additional generators into a unified, scalable system.

Understanding the Unique Power Demands of Data Centers

A data center’s power needs go far beyond a simple backup generator. The industry standard is built on layers of redundancy to eliminate any single point of failure.

Redundancy (N+1, 2N): The “N” in this equation represents the total power load required to run the facility’s critical systems. An N+1 design means having at least one more backup generator than is required (e.g., needing three generators to carry the load, but having four installed). A 2N design provides full redundancy by creating two completely independent, mirrored power systems.

UPS and Generator Integration: The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system, with its batteries, provides instantaneous power for the first few seconds of an outage, preventing any “blink” that could disrupt servers. The generator’s role is to start within seconds and seamlessly take the load from the UPS for long-duration support, allowing the UPS batteries to recharge. This handshake between the UPS, the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), and the generator must be flawless.

Scalability: As a data center grows, its power needs increase. The backup power system must be designed for scalability, often through the use of paralleling switchgear that allows additional generators to be easily integrated into the system.
