Case Study: Delivering a 500kW Generator With Voltage Conversion for a Commercial Facility in Texas

Industry: Commercial operations
Service region: North Texas
Generator supplied: Cummins industrial diesel generator
Capacity: 500kW
Fuel type: Diesel
Voltage: Converted to 120/208V
Housing: Sound-attenuated enclosure
Application: Standby backup power for facility operations
Outcome: Delivered and reconfigured a generator to match site-specific voltage and electrical requirements

The Challenge

A commercial facility in North Texas required a standby generator solution that aligned with both capacity needs and existing electrical infrastructure.

While the selected generator platform was appropriate for the application, the facility operated on a 120/208V electrical system, creating the need for voltage conversion and electrical modifications prior to deployment. The generator also needed to be fully tested at the converted voltage to confirm compatibility and performance before installation.

The challenge was coordinating equipment supply, voltage conversion, and testing into a single, streamlined project without introducing delays.

Why It Mattered

For commercial facilities, backup power systems must integrate cleanly with existing electrical distribution. Voltage mismatches or unverified configurations can create installation issues, operational risk, and unexpected rework.

In this case, it was critical that the generator:

  • Was properly sized for the facility’s load
  • Matched the site’s 120/208V electrical requirements
  • Was tested and validated prior to delivery
  • Arrived ready for installation

Resolving configuration requirements in advance reduced risk and simplified on-site integration.

The Generator Source Solution

Generator Source supplied a 500kW Cummins industrial diesel generator and completed a full voltage conversion to 120/208V to align with site requirements.

The scope of work included electrical modifications to support the new voltage configuration, control reprogramming, and load bank testing performed at 208 volts to confirm performance under load.

By completing the conversion and testing prior to delivery, Generator Source ensured the generator was configured correctly before arriving on site.

Execution and Testing

Execution focused on accuracy and verification.

Voltage conversion work was completed in advance, followed by load bank testing at the final operating voltage to validate performance. Freight logistics were then coordinated to deliver the sound-attenuated generator to the site in North Texas, aligned with installation timing.

Clear communication throughout the process helped keep electrical work, testing, and delivery aligned.

Results

The facility secured a 500kW standby generator configured specifically for its electrical requirements.

The outcome delivered:

  • Backup power aligned with site voltage and capacity needs
  • Verified performance through load bank testing
  • Reduced installation risk by addressing configuration requirements ahead of time

The generator arrived ready for integration into the facility’s backup power system.

Ongoing Considerations

For standby generators supporting commercial facilities, Generator Source recommends routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and periodic testing to maintain readiness.

These practices help protect reliability and long-term system performance.
