Case Study: Resolving a Persistent Generator No-Start Issue for a Longmont, CO Healthcare Facility

Industry: Healthcare
Location: Longmont, Colorado
Services Provided: Generator diagnostics, gas pressure evaluation, senior technician escalation, onsite troubleshooting

Project Overview

A medical endoscopy center in Longmont, Colorado faced a recurring issue where their natural gas generator failed to start reliably. Despite months of service attempts by a different generator service provider, the unit continued to show long crank times, intermittent overcrank codes, and starting failures that created risk for the facility.

The customer contacted Generator Source for expert support. Our Colorado service team reviewed the situation, conducted onsite diagnostics, and identified the underlying factors causing the generator to fail.

The Problem

Before contacting Generator Source, the facility worked with another service vendor who attempted multiple repairs over several months. The customer had received visits in May, July, September, and October, each time for the same no-start or slow-start symptoms.

Past actions by the previous provider included:

  • Adjusting gas supply pressure
  • Replacing a secondary regulator
  • Attempting to address intermittent overcrank alarms
  • Conducting partial inspections

However, none of these efforts solved the problem. The generator continued to fail to start reliably, and the facility expressed concern that the issue might be worsening.

When the customer contacted Generator Source, the onsite technician reported a complete failure to start and suspected a gas pressure or spark issue. This required immediate support because reliable backup power is essential in a healthcare setting.

Our Diagnostic Approach

When the call came in, Generator Source took the following steps:

1. Reviewed the full history from the previous provider
Our coordinator pulled the detailed service records provided by the customer to understand what had already been attempted. This included regulator replacement dates, pressure adjustments, and past diagnostic notes.

2. Identified recurring symptoms that had never been resolved
Four separate visits showed the same issues in different months, indicating the original root cause was never fully addressed.

3. Guided the onsite technician through preliminary checks
We verified that the generator would not start and confirmed that gas pressure behavior and ignition were still suspect.

4. Discovered a critical onsite condition
The technician observed that the generator was sharing a gas line with six to seven other rooftop appliances. Shared gas supply systems can starve a generator of fuel during crank or load conditions, especially during peak building demand.

5. Dispatched a senior technician
A senior Colorado technician was sent immediately to the facility to assist with rooftop diagnostics and stabilize the unit for upcoming preventative maintenance.

The Solution

Once our senior technician arrived on site, Generator Source:

  • Conducted targeted fuel pressure and spark system tests
  • Evaluated the regulator performance installed by the previous provider
  • Monitored the effects of the shared gas line during crank attempts
  • Corrected immediate startup issues
  • Prepared the generator for the scheduled PM service visit

Our team did not charge the customer for unnecessary diagnostic work. The focus was on restoring operation and identifying the true cause of the repeated failures.

The Result

Generator Source stabilized the generator and restored its ability to start, giving the healthcare facility the reliable backup power needed for patient safety and regulatory compliance. The customer also gained clarity on why the previous service attempts were unsuccessful.

Key outcomes included:

  • Reliable start performance restored
  • Clear identification of contributing factors (shared gas feed and pressure irregularities)
  • A documented understanding of the generator’s operational history
  • A path forward for long term system improvement
  • Confidence in continued care through Generator Source’s preventative maintenance program

The medical facility moved forward with its scheduled service with confidence that its generator would perform during an outage.
