Slow-Moving Gulf Storms and Your Backup Power

A tropical system is building in the Gulf this week, and the National Hurricane Center expects it to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha as it drifts slowly along the northern Gulf Coast. A Tropical Storm Watch is already in effect for parts of the Florida Panhandle and Alabama coast, with heavy rain, gusty winds, and flash flooding forecast from western Florida to the Texas coast through the end of the week.

A storm is the worst possible time to learn your generator has a dead battery or contaminated fuel. The good news is that most storm-related generator failures are preventable, and the steps to prevent them take less than an hour.

Why Slow Storms Are Harder On the Grid

A fast-moving system passes through in a matter of hours. A slow one parks over the region for days, and that changes the math on power reliability.

Prolonged rain saturates the ground until trees and utility poles lose their footing. Sustained wind works at weakened limbs and lines over a much longer window. Repeated rain bands moving over the same area drive flash flooding, which can knock out substations and force utilities to de-energize entire circuits for safety. The result is that outages during a slow storm tend to be both more widespread and longer lasting than the wind speed alone would suggest.

What Commercial Facilities Have On the Line

Residential outage advice does not translate to a commercial or industrial site. The stakes and the equipment are both bigger.

A refrigerated warehouse can lose an entire load of product if power drops for even a few hours. A healthcare facility has patients and regulatory obligations that do not pause for weather. A data center measures downtime in dollars per minute. A wastewater plant that loses power creates a public health problem. In each case, the generator is not a backup plan. It is core infrastructure, and it needs to be treated that way going into a storm.

That is why a pre-storm check matters more for a business than for a household. The cost of a failure is orders of magnitude higher, and the window to fix a problem closes the moment the weather arrives.

Your Pre-Storm Generator Checklist

Work through these steps today, while there is still time to correct anything you find.

  • Run a load test – Start the unit and let it run under load if your setup allows it. A generator that starts fine with no load can still stumble when the building’s actual demand hits it. Listen for hesitation, watch for voltage or frequency surges, and note any fault codes. If something looks off, get a technician on it now rather than during the outage.
  • Confirm fuel quantity and quality – Top off diesel tanks so you are not rationing runtime during a multi-day event. Just as important, confirm fuel quality. Stored diesel degrades over time and is prone to microbial growth and water contamination, both of which can clog filters and stall an engine right when you need it. If your tank has been sitting since last season, have the fuel tested or polished. For natural gas units, verify that your supply and connections are sound.
  • Check the batteries – Weak starting batteries are the single most common reason a generator fails to start during an outage. Check the charge level, clean and tighten the terminals, and confirm the battery charger and block heater are functioning. A battery that reads fine at rest can still fail under the cranking load of a cold start.
  • Verify the transfer switch – Your automatic transfer switch is what actually brings the generator online when utility power drops. Confirm it is set to automatic mode and that it exercises and transfers properly. A perfectly healthy generator does nothing if the switch does not call for it.
  • Clear and secure the area – Remove debris and vegetation from around the unit, secure loose items nearby that could become projectiles in high wind, and make sure air intakes and exhaust outlets are completely unobstructed. For units in low-lying areas, consider flood exposure and whether the installation sits above expected water levels.
  • Know your capacity – Confirm that your generator is actually sized for the loads you plan to run during the outage. If your facility has added equipment since the unit was installed, or if you intend to run more than the essentials this time, you may be closer to the unit’s limit than you think. Overloading a generator during a storm is a fast way to lose it entirely.

During the Storm

Once the weather sets in, keep interaction with the unit minimal and safe.

Never operate a generator in a way that allows exhaust to reach occupied spaces, and never refuel a hot unit. Monitor runtime and fuel consumption so you can plan resupply before the tank runs low. If you are running an extended outage, manage your loads deliberately, prioritizing critical systems and shedding non-essential ones to preserve fuel and reduce strain on the unit. Keep your service provider’s emergency line accessible in case something goes wrong mid-event.

After the Storm

When power is restored and conditions are safe, do not simply walk away from the unit.

Have the generator inspected before returning it to standby, especially if it ran for an extended period or was exposed to flooding. Check oil and coolant levels, replace filters if the unit logged significant hours, and top off fuel so you are ready for the next event. Storm season rarely brings just one system, and a generator that carried you through this week needs to be reset and ready for the next one.

When Permanent Backup Is Not Enough

Not every facility has a generator sized for a multi-day event, and some operations discover during a storm that their coverage has gaps. Temporary and supplemental power fills those gaps.
